Carmen Convent, today a cultural centre

Centre del Carme

The former Carmen Convent, today known as Centre del Carme, has its origins in the 13th century. Its function as a museum centuries later kept it from facing the same fate as other convents in the city that were demolished. It has been the seat of the  Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos and the seat of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, since it housed and conserved the works of disentailed convents and monasteries. The fact that is was declared an Historic Artistic Monument in 1983 allowed the restoration of the building, considered as an exceptional historic ensemble for its Gothic and Renaissance cloisters, the chapter hall and the refectory.
Currently it is a very active cultural centre where you can enjoy first-rate art exhibitions.
